How AI Search Works

How Does ChatGPT Search the Web?

ChatGPT doesn't have its own search engine. It uses Bing. That means your Bing rankings directly determine whether ChatGPT can find and cite your website.

The Short Answer

When you ask ChatGPT a question that needs current information, it searches Bing's web index, reads the top results, and synthesizes an answer with source links. OpenAI also runs its own crawler (OAI-SearchBot) to supplement Bing's data.

For your website to appear in ChatGPT answers, two conditions must be met: Bing must have indexed your pages, and your robots.txt must allow OpenAI's crawlers. If either is missing, ChatGPT can't cite you.

How the Pipeline Works

From user question to cited source, step by step.

1

User asks a question

A ChatGPT user types a question that needs current information. ChatGPT decides it needs to search the web.

2

ChatGPT queries Bing

ChatGPT sends a search query to Bing's API. Bing returns ranked results from its web index, just like it would for a normal Bing search.

3

OAI-SearchBot fetches pages

OpenAI's search crawler fetches the top Bing results to read the full page content. It checks robots.txt first. If you block OAI-SearchBot, it stops here.

4

ChatGPT reads and synthesizes

ChatGPT reads the fetched pages, extracts relevant information, and generates an answer that combines insights from multiple sources.

5

Sources are cited

The answer includes clickable source links back to the original websites. Users can click through to your site.

The Bing Connection

OpenAI and Microsoft have a deep partnership. Microsoft invested billions in OpenAI, and in return, OpenAI uses Bing's search infrastructure. This is why your Bing SEO directly affects your ChatGPT visibility.

Most SEOs focus on Google rankings and ignore Bing. But with ChatGPT Search sending millions of queries through Bing daily, Bing rankings now have a second layer of value.

What This Means for You

  • 1.Submit to Bing Webmaster Tools. If you haven't already, verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your sitemap.
  • 2.Check the AI Performance tab. Bing Webmaster Tools has an "AI Performance" section showing "grounding queries" where Copilot cited your site.
  • 3.Allow OAI-SearchBot. Make sure your robots.txt doesn't block OAI-SearchBot.
  • 4.Use IndexNow. Bing supports IndexNow for instant URL submission. When you publish new content, ping Bing immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does ChatGPT use Google or Bing?

ChatGPT uses Bing. OpenAI has a partnership with Microsoft, and ChatGPT Search relies on Bing's web index to find and cite sources. Your Bing rankings directly affect whether ChatGPT can find your content.

Can ChatGPT access any website?

No. ChatGPT can only access websites that allow its crawlers (OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User) in robots.txt AND are indexed by Bing. If either condition fails, ChatGPT can't cite your site.

How do I get my site cited by ChatGPT?

Three things need to be true: 1) Your site must be indexed by Bing. 2) OAI-SearchBot must not be blocked in your robots.txt. 3) Your content must be relevant to the query. BotView checks conditions 1 and 2 for you.

Does ChatGPT always search the web?

No. ChatGPT searches the web when it determines the question needs current information, or when the user explicitly uses the search feature. For general knowledge questions, it relies on its training data without searching.

Is ChatGPT Search the same as SearchGPT?

Yes. SearchGPT was a prototype that OpenAI tested in 2024. It's now integrated directly into ChatGPT as 'ChatGPT Search'. The crawler is OAI-SearchBot.

Does Microsoft Copilot use the same system as ChatGPT?

Both use Bing's index, but they're separate products. Copilot runs on Microsoft's infrastructure with its own ranking logic. ChatGPT uses Bing data through the OpenAI-Microsoft partnership but has its own selection criteria for citations.
