AI Search Visibility: How to Measure It — and Improve It
Your site is either present in AI answers or silently absent. Here's what visibility actually consists of, and how to check yours.
What AI search visibility means
AI search visibility is the degree to which AI search engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot — can access, index, and cite your website in their answers.
Unlike classic search visibility, there is no results page to inspect. When an AI engine answers a question in your topic, your site is either among the handful of cited sources or it contributes nothing. And because the failure is silent — no error, no ranking drop, just absence — most sites don't know which side they're on.
The three metrics that define it
Crawler access — binary, per bot.
Can each engine's crawler physically fetch your pages? This is the gate: OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search, Claude-SearchBot for Claude, PerplexityBot for Perplexity. One robots.txt line or one WAF rule flips it. Access is the easiest metric to check and the most common one to fail without knowing.
Answer-readiness — a 0–100 score.
Given access, will an engine find anything liftable? BotView grades this as a GEO score across seven dimensions of the rendered page: answer extractability, Q&A structure, headings, schema, entity clarity, citations, freshness.
Citations — the outcome metric.
How often AI answers actually cite you, and for which prompts. This is the hardest to measure: it requires continuously querying the engines themselves, which is what enterprise share-of-voice platforms charge for. BotView deliberately doesn't do this today — we measure the two layers you can directly control, which are also the reason citations do or don't happen. For the landscape of tools that track citations, see our honest ranking.
Why Google visibility doesn't transfer
AI engines run their own crawlers with their own rules. Googlebot rendering your JavaScript doesn't help GPTBot, which doesn't execute it. Ranking on Google doesn't put you in ChatGPT's search results — those draw on Bing's index and are gated by OAI-SearchBot. Every engine is a separate door, and each door has its own lock. That's why per-bot checking exists.

Read the per-bot grid: every crawler that can and can't reach you, with the reason (robots.txt rule, WAF challenge, network failure) — never a guess.
Check the GEO score on the scanned page: 0–100 answer-readiness with the specific fixes listed.
What lowers AI search visibility
- −A robots.txt rule blocking a search-index bot (often inherited from a “block all AI” template)
- −CDN or WAF bot protection challenging AI crawlers site-wide
- −Content that only exists after JavaScript runs
- −Absence from Bing's index (ChatGPT search draws on it)
- −Pages with no extractable answers — long unstructured prose, no schema, undated claims
Visibility regresses silently — monitor it
Access changes without anyone deciding it: a CDN update ships a new bot rule, a robots.txt edit for one crawler catches another. BotView's free monitoring re-checks your crawler access weekly and emails you only when something actually changes.
AI search visibility — frequently asked questions
What is AI search visibility?
The degree to which AI engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Copilot can access, index, and cite your website in their answers. It's measured at three levels: crawler access, answer-readiness, and citations.
How is it different from SEO visibility?
SEO visibility is your presence in ranked results you can inspect. AI search visibility has no results page — you're either cited in an answer or absent from it, and each AI engine uses its own crawlers and rules, separate from Google's.
Can I rank on Google but be invisible to ChatGPT?
Yes, easily. ChatGPT search is gated by OAI-SearchBot and draws on Bing's index; Googlebot access and Google rankings play no role. A single robots.txt or WAF rule can block AI crawlers while Google continues to see everything.
What's a good GEO score?
The score is 0–100 across seven dimensions; treat it as a fix-list rather than a grade to hit. The per-dimension breakdown on the report tells you exactly what an answer engine can't extract today.
How often should I re-check?
After any robots.txt, CDN, or WAF change — and weekly on autopilot. Access regressions are silent, which is what BotView's free weekly monitoring is for.
