Answer Engine Optimization

What is AEO?

Answer Engine Optimization

The practice of structuring your content so answer engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews — can quote it directly, with attribution.

AEO, defined

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring web content so that answer engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Microsoft Copilot, and voice assistants — can extract it, quote it, and attribute it when they answer a user's question directly.

A search engine returns a list of links and lets you compete for the click. An answer engine returns the answer itself and cites a handful of sources. AEO is the work of becoming one of those sources. There is no position two: your content is either quoted or absent.

That changes what "optimized" means. Keywords and backlinks still matter for being found, but answer engines select what to quote based on how liftable your content is: whether a passage answers a question completely, in place, without needing the rest of the page around it.

AEO vs GEO vs SEO

AEO and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) are two names for substantially the same discipline. "GEO" comes from the academic side — a 2024 research paper by teams at Princeton, Georgia Tech, the Allen Institute, and IIT Delhi. "AEO" grew up in the marketing community around featured snippets and voice search, and travelled naturally to AI answers. Different vocabularies, same job: get quoted by machines that answer questions.

In practice you should not choose between them. SEO gets you crawled and indexed; AEO/GEO gets you quoted. BotView measures both halves: whether AI crawlers can reach your pages at all, and a GEO score for how quotable each page is once they arrive.

How to do AEO: six practices

1

Answer first, explain second.

Put a complete one-to-two-sentence answer directly under each heading, then elaborate. Answer engines lift passages, not pages — a buried answer is an invisible answer.

2

One question per heading, phrased the way people ask it.

“What is AEO?” beats “Our perspective on emerging optimization paradigms”. Match the literal question and the passage becomes the literal answer.

3

Mark it up.

Use FAQPage, Article, and HowTo schema where each genuinely applies. Schema doesn't guarantee quoting, but it removes ambiguity about what your content is.

4

Make facts liftable.

One fact per sentence. Concrete numbers, named sources, dated claims. A paragraph that fuses five hedged claims into one sentence gives an engine nothing safe to quote.

5

Let answer engines in.

None of the above matters if the crawlers are blocked. The gates for the big three: OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT search), Claude-SearchBot (Claude), PerplexityBot (Perplexity). Blocking these in robots.txt — or behind a WAF challenge — removes you from consideration entirely.

6

Measure it.

Check crawler access per bot, then score each page's answer-readiness. Re-check after changes; access regressions (a CDN update, a new WAF rule) are silent.

Does AEO actually work?

The best controlled evidence comes from the research that named GEO: Aggarwal et al. (KDD 2024) found that optimizations like adding quotations, statistics, and citations improved a source's visibility in generative engine responses by up to 40% on their benchmark. That is a benchmark result, not a guarantee for any given site — but the direction is consistent with how these engines select sources: they quote content that is easy and safe to quote.

AEO — frequently asked questions

Is AEO the same as GEO?

Substantially, yes. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) describe the same practice — structuring content so AI systems quote it. “GEO” comes from a 2024 academic paper; “AEO” comes from the marketing community. The tactics are the same.

Is AEO replacing SEO?

No — it layers on top. Answer engines still discover and index content through crawling, so traditional SEO remains the foundation. AEO is the additional work of being quotable once you're found.

What counts as an answer engine?

Any system that answers the user's question directly instead of returning links: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Microsoft Copilot, Claude, and voice assistants.

How do I measure AEO?

Two levels. Access: can the engines' crawlers reach your pages (checkable per bot, free). Answer-readiness: how liftable your content is — BotView scores this 0–100 as a GEO score across seven dimensions.

Does schema markup matter for AEO?

It helps engines classify your content unambiguously — FAQPage and Article markup in particular. It is one of seven dimensions in BotView's GEO score, not a silver bullet on its own.
